RAL COLOUR FEELING 2028+ sees itself as a mediator between colour and place, between global colour tendencies and context-based design. The report distinguishes between colour notations and colour experience; what happens when colour enters an environment, is set into a space, and enters into relation. All colours were tried and tested experimentally on site. The RAL COLOUR FEELING 2028+ Trendbox adds the material dimension to the concept and is the perfect tool for contemporary, deliberate design.

Hands-on Colour design
Testing colours virtually is one thing; experiencing them hands-on in action is another. Members of the team explored all 15 colours extensively in the studio. The result: countless colour relationships, compelling colour-and-form combinations, and the insight that these colours are equal to a wide range of application functions. They produce soft colour-space scenarios and colour-form compositions that are enjoble, calming, or genuinely worth arguing about.

Accent tones such as Maple red, Straw yellow, Kiwi sorbet green and Madder rose create a contemporary, dynamic impression, grounded in the high-contrast and atmospheric character of current spatial and product concepts. Golden quartz ochre and the consciously continued colours Pepper white and Light teal stand for material integrity, softness and lightness. Confident, empathetically activating base tones such as Pinkish brown, Chestnut brown, Date fruit brown and Butterfly blue give the palette body. What makes the palette compelling is its capacity for contrast. Between calm combinations and dynamic chords, colour combinations can be found for most of today's applications in design and architecture.

READ + RESPOND

Artificial intelligence raises the question of whether we have understood the design disciplines correctly until now. While AI handles the legwork with ease, we must rediscover and lay bare the human core of our work.

“Read” describes the ability to read a situation: to attentively comprehend place, material, light and context, and to find threads to pick up. “Respond” means answering what has been read with careful design and imagination: not overwriting the existing entirely, but building on it, honouring its traces, continuing or reconfiguring them.

To design in a situated way means working in context, inspecting the real space, and finding colours there. This design becomes relational when it builds relationships between people, space, object, material and colour. It succeeds when finding processes are shaped cooperatively, decisions are made jointly, and different needs are recognised. Deliberate design knows its responsibility for the functioning of a design. A design is good when it is resonant. When it brings into being a constellation between object, place and person that creates something greater than the elements on their own.

Colour is therefore not understood here as decoration but as infrastructure: it orders, orientates, includes, and makes function tangible. When we choose a colour for a coworking space, we are not decorating; we are supporting collaboration. When we specify a tone for a care facility, we are not following a short-lived trend; we are anticipating demographic change. Cultural tendencies are not abstract forces to us but lived realities.

Contemporary design is situated and relational

The palette follows the principle of continuity: five colours are carried forward, ten are renewed. This approach holds it together beyond the single season and makes combining colours easier; standardisation as part of a quality strategy oriented toward permanence. The report thus delivers not a mere prognosis, but a reasoned foundation for colour decisions in product, collection and spatial contexts.

For industry and retail, the palette offers concrete market advantages: the continuity of selected colours enables collection transitions and reduces changeover costs in production. The new accent colours create potential for differentiation in the market and appeal to design-conscious buyer groups. Through the systematic coordination of the colours, manufacturers can develop coherent product families, exploit cross-selling potential and expand their ranges in a targeted way. The international validation of the colour trends secures marketability across different regions. For furniture, textile and product manufacturers in particular, predefined harmonisation makes it easier to develop compatible collections and considerably shortens time-to-market.

Every colour within the matrix combines seamlessly with all others. The palette is curated and arranged to generate endless compelling combinations; from dynamic contrasts to subtle tonal progressions. These versatile relationships enable design solutions precisely calibrated to specific contexts, brand identities or audience segments. Products gain distinction and differentiation, while spatial sequences can be fine-tuned both atmospherically and strategically.

RAL COLOUR FEELING 2028+ is a professional design tool for effective design.

RAL COLOUR FEELING 2028+ makes the colour design of products, collections and spaces effective. Curated by our team using empirical methods, the palette helps design departments and architects to make well-founded colour decisions. Sometimes a single accent tone is enough to extend an existing concept.

CONTEXT-BASED DESIGN

The report presents colour combinations suited to particular functions in context-based design. The colour combinations appearing most frequently in our research can be divided into five basic design directions. They present inspiring colour profiles as points of connection for situation-oriented decisions; for diverse and appealing working and living spaces. In the relationship between people, space and material, colour contributes to wellbeing, provides orientation and order, and makes products tangible in their embodied function and their distinct emotional content.

SITUATED DESIGN

The report presents colour combinations suited to particular functions in context-based design. Situated design matters because it creates situations that are readable for customers or users, residents or professionals, in the sense that they reflect what is appropriate for an activity, an experience or a behaviour. Calm colours suit working environments, whereas lively colour in the urban realm can mark a meeting point in a park and invite communication.

The distinction between main colours, zoning colours and accents helps with selection: main colours suit larger surfaces, accents tend to suit smaller ones, and zoning colours suit areas that should stand out but are larger than individual focal points. This is a handrail, not a law. An accent tone can work beautifully at scale, in an exhibition stand, in an immersive design, or in a space where people spend only a short time. For typography, graphics and wayfinding systems, one rule applies throughout: always check how the colours behave in contrast to one another.

READ + RESPOND Background

The RAL COLOUR FEELING series is deliberately less time-bound than publications focused purely on short-lived trend colours. Our aim is not to define a rigidly fixed set of colours but to develop a current and future-capable colour profile that opens up design possibilities.

The trend memo shows which mega, macro and micro trends we took into account in our decision-making in order to select the 15 colours for READ + RESPOND. The key words of the collection are instructions for contemporary design.

The colours chosen for the trend report are based on the observation and evaluation of social, technological, economic and design-related tendencies over the past 60 years. The resulting colour spectrum also draws on fundamental design categories and detailed studies of colour effect and colour perception. The selection is therefore not merely an aesthetic decision but a data-informed finding, drawn from a pool of 20,000 to 30,000 images and further standardised sources that is rebuilt, reviewed and evaluated every six months. We work by observing, not only by being inspired.

RAL stands for quality

RAL has stood for quality for decades. This approach is demonstrated from the decision to make the colour trend collections freely available up to the awarding of the Blue Angel environmental quality seal.
